Gilded Watercolor: Laguiole Knife in Multicolor Elder Burl – Sculpted Bee – Brass Bolsters and Copper Liners

649€

“Gilded Watercolor” owes its name to the handle, where the colors have run together like pigment on damp paper. It is a one-off Laguiole, the handwork of a lone cutler at Laguiole en Aubrac. Multicolor elder burl forms the handle: washes of vermilion and burnt sienna flow up against patches of slate blue, slide toward ochre and golden yellow, and fade to cream wherever the eyes of the wood come to the surface. Every shade dissolves into the next through soft, wet transitions without a single crisp outline, so each side of the handle paints a slightly different landscape.

The spring is held between two scalloped copper liners in a deep, orange-tinged pink. Three motifs alternate along its length without ever repeating exactly: long flames chiseled in polished relief, rows of beads raised one at a time with a pointed tool, and small four-petal rosettes nested in square cartouches. The bee wears this very flower as its head, and the spring repeats it all the way down to the far end of the knife.

At both ends, the handle is closed by brushed brass bolsters with a soft, matte sheen that answers the copper while remaining distinct from it. At the top, the bee is treated like a jewel. A cord of tiny beads surrounds it completely, outlining it like the bezel around a gemstone. For a head it has a four-petal rosette, its wings are two broad teardrops trimmed with the same beading and marked with a line of punched dots, and its body, between them, is scored with fine, perfectly regular ribs carried all the way to the tip.

“Gilded Watercolor” will appeal to collectors who respond to color as strongly as to the jeweler’s art. Free-flowing washes in the burl, the warm pairing of copper liners and brass bolsters, a spring alternating flames, beads, and rosettes, and a bee ringed like a jewel add up to a richly detailed piece, made to be savored by eye and by hand alike.

Created in 1829 in the small village of Laguiole for local farmers, this knife has risen to become one of the most celebrated in France, distinguished by its emblematic bee, a symbol of prestige and quality.

Laguiole en Aubrac Knife in Multicolor Elder Burl

Color moves through this Laguiole the way it spreads on wet paper. The handle in multicolor elder burl mingles washes of vermilion, burnt earth, slate blue, ochre, and golden yellow, down to cream flashes at the eyes of the wood, with no hard boundary anywhere.

Scalloped copper liners enclose the spring, where flames, rows of beads, and four-petal rosettes take turns, and brushed brass bolsters finish the handle at both ends. The bee is outlined all around in beads, with a rosette for a head, bead-trimmed teardrop wings, and a finely ribbed body.

Colors left free to run, held in place by copper and brass and crowned by a bee mounted like a jewel: "Gilded Watercolor" is a painting that folds shut and travels with you. There is exactly one, and it will never be made again. If both color and fine metalwork speak to you, make it yours now.

Vermilion, burnt sienna, slate blue, and ochre bleed softly into one another across the stabilized elder burl, opening into cream wherever the eyes of the wood rise. Between scalloped copper liners, the spring runs through polished flames, rows of beads, and small four-petal rosettes in square frames, with brushed brass bolsters at each end. Ringed in tiny beads, the bee has a rosette for a head, teardrop wings, and a body of fine, even ribs.

gilded watercolor: laguiole knife in multicolor elder burl – sculpted bee – brass bolsters and copper liners

This wood looks as if it had been painted with water. All over the burl, the colors spread the way they do on wet paper: a deep vermilion running down one face, burnt earth blending into it, a pool of slate blue to cool things down, then ochre, golden yellow, and those cream flashes where the eyes of the wood would not take the dye. No shape has a firm outline. Everything melts, overflows, and gathers again in damp transitions, and turning the knife over reveals a completely different landscape on the other side.

Over this watercolor, someone has laid warm metal. Two scalloped copper liners in a deep orange-pink set off the spring, while the brushed brass bolsters at each end bring a softer, lighter, more muted tone, two warm metals that echo each other without ever merging. Between the liners, the ornament plays out in three movements: long chiseled flames, rows of beads aligned one by one, and tiny four-petal rosettes tucked inside their square cartouches.

Finally, at the top, the bee adds its signature to the painting. A cord of beads surrounds it on every side, as though it were set. Its head repeats the four-petal rosette from the spring, its wings open as two wide teardrops edged in beads and dotted with a line of punched hollows, and its body carries fine, even ribs. It seems less engraved into the metal than mounted in it. “Gilded Watercolor” is built on that meeting: free-running color in the wood, brass and copper to contain it, and a jeweler’s bee placed like the painter’s last touch.

Multicolor Elder Burl

What looks like paint here began as a swelling on the trunk of an elder. Inside such a burl, the fibers refuse to run straight. They bunch and coil around themselves, leaving a dense, unruly figure of whirls and little eyes, and stabilization sets that structure deep in the wood before the first dye goes on.

Dyed in several colors, the burl becomes a genuine watercolor: vermilion, burnt earth, slate blue, and ochre soak into the grain and merge without any boundary, while the densest zones hold less dye and open into cream and golden highlights. Nature never paints the same handle twice. Stabilized before assembly, this burl does not move with time, and it sits softly and warmly in the hand, deeply polished under the fingers. At both ends of "Gilded Watercolor," the brushed brass bolsters frame it and heighten the warmth of its colors.

The way these colors met in the wood can never be arranged a second time, and no other spring carries these same flames, beads, and rosettes. This pairing of painterly burl and jeweler's detail exists once, so if it has caught your eye, do not wait for it to come back.
