Laguiole 24-Piece Flatware Set
This Laguiole 24-piece flatware set, handmade in France by Laguiole en Aubrac, is a service for six. Every guest has four pieces: knife, fork, soup spoon and dessert spoon. All four share the same handle, so every setting looks complete, from the first course to dessert.
You may also know it as a 24-piece silverware set. It comes in eleven versions, from satin juniper to polished horn tip, so you can match the handles to the look of your dining room. The pieces are stored in an oak silverware chest fitted with two trays, one for knives and forks, one for spoons. Every set is issued with a numbered certificate, and each knife blade bears the name of its maker, Laguiole en Aubrac.

Wooden handle silverware vs horn: juniper, wenge or horn tip
For wooden handle silverware, start with juniper or wenge. Juniper is satin-finished and runs from blond to honey, with small knots that make each handle a little different. Wenge is satin too, but dark brown, almost black, with a straight grain. If you prefer a glossy finish, go for horn tip: it's polished, with streaks of blond or amber in a browner horn, and some handles let the light through. Whichever you choose, the same material runs through all 24 pieces, from the knives to the dessert spoons.

Flatware chest: oak, with two trays inside
Your set is housed in an oak flatware chest. Knives and forks have a tray of their own, and so do the twelve spoons, so you can take out what you need without emptying the whole chest. Between dinners, the chest keeps dust off the 24 pieces and stops them from scratching each other. If a silverware storage box was next on your list, you can cross it off: this one comes with the set and holds all 24 pieces.
24-piece flatware set or 28 pieces?
Choose the 24-piece flatware set if six place settings cover your table, from weeknight meals to a sit-down dinner. If you carve at the table or serve a cheese course, look at the Laguiole 28-Piece Luxury Flatware Set. It adds four serving pieces with matching handles, for carving and for cheese, and its case is black and lined with fabric, not oak. Both are handmade in France by Laguiole en Aubrac, so the choice is about the serving pieces and the case.
Before you choose your 24-piece set
How many place settings are in a 24-piece flatware set?
Six, with four pieces in each: a knife, a fork, a soup spoon and a dessert spoon for every guest. Because the set covers soup and dessert as well as the main course, you won't need extra spoons for a three-course dinner. If you regularly host twelve, two sets in the same handle material give you twelve place settings.
What is a 4-piece place setting?
It's a setting of four pieces for one guest. In this Laguiole set, those are a knife, a fork, a soup spoon and a dessert spoon. Many American sets use five-piece settings, with a salad fork as the extra piece, so this set suits a meal of soup, a main course and dessert. Six of these settings make the 24 pieces.
What is a silverware box called?
Most people call it a silverware chest or a flatware chest. With this set you don't need to buy one: the 24 pieces come in an oak chest with two trays, knives and forks on one, spoons on the other, so they stay apart and tidy between dinners.
Care instructions come with every set: wash the pieces by hand, dry them right away, and never run wood or horn handles through the dishwasher.
