All that fire is the doing of resin stabilization, because elder on its own stays somewhere between cream and pale beige. With no bolsters on a full handle, the eruption has the whole knife to itself.

On the rim of the crater waits a guard: a 3D-sculpted bee standing proud at the head of the spring. Each wing is a cluster of geometric facets, every one buffed to a mirror. Her ringed body climbs in sharp grooves, and she catches the light just as well from the front as from the side. Description

This handle holds a volcano, and it is erupting right now. Carmine and orange pour down the elder burl, swerve around the charcoal patches, split, and join again. Eyes of cream and gold spatter out like thrown fragments of glowing rock, and the bluish shadows drifting over it all are smoke, lit from underneath by the blaze. Resin seized every bit of it at the climax of the eruption and held it still. Something that should have lasted one night in the life of the planet now fits in your palm.

The cutler made no attempt to put out the fire, choosing to steer it instead. Along the spring, the file dug a riverbed for the lava, big, deep S-curves snaking the whole length of the handle, each flow of steel rimmed with shadow and held between two polished bands like banks of bright metal. That is the one place on the knife where the fire follows orders. Elsewhere, with no bolster to interrupt or contain it, the eruption floods the full handle from heel to head.

And up at the summit, someone keeps watch over the crater. The bee on this piece is sculpted in three dimensions and stands in relief along the line of the knife, with faceted geometric wings that catch the light in clean planes and a ringed, grooved body. Red Elder Burl

Inside an elder burl, the grain behaves like ground about to erupt. Fibers pushed off course curl into eddies, hollows, and knots packed close, so the block looks like volcanic country in miniature, wood that seems to have boiled before it set. On this handle, stabilization caught that turmoil at its peak. The air is pulled out of the wood under vacuum and resin takes its place in each fiber. That step is what brings in the carmine and orange streams over their dark background, since raw elder is a plain cream to light beige. The burl comes out denser and harder, with a stability that is there for good.

Full and silky in the hand and unbothered by moisture, it makes a full handle that changes with every tilt: one angle lights up a flow, the next uncovers a spark or moves a wisp of smoke. Only once did this volcano erupt, and it did so for this knife.
