The salamander, according to old legend, dwells in flames and is never burned. This knife has given it a home. The elder burl handle is precisely the color of a covered fire, a dense, almost black night blue ripped open by flows of cream, amber, and orange. In it, the eyes of the wood flare up like coals someone has just poked. Darkness and embers coexist without either ever prevailing, and a slow turn of the piece in the hand is enough to light a flame where, a moment ago, the eye found nothing but shadow.
The spring traces the path of that fire. At the top, beneath the head of the knife, it is fully ablaze, a tight frieze of chevrons and ribbed diamonds chiseled in close relief, fitting together like the links of a chain heated until it glows white. Halfway down, the blaze subsides. The steel calms and goes smooth. The ornament has not vanished, though: it has moved to the liners, guilloché in a fine notched pattern on both sides. The fire has left the center and now runs only along the margins.
The true heart of the fire lies elsewhere, in the bee. Its body lifts into a long spike, ribbed so tightly that you could believe you were watching the white core of a flame shimmer. Its wings spread wide, paneled with crisp veins and sharply outlined, like two sails stretched above the furnace, while a dome of stippled beads, piled up at the back of the head, is a spray of sparks frozen in flight. This bee is the knife’s salamander, the one that stays closest to the flames without the slightest fear, and whose breath alone brings the sleeping embers in the wood back to life.
