Ironwood grows in scorched country. It is dense enough to sink in water and so hard that it carries something of the fire of the land where it grew. This handle has the colors of a resting ember: a deep, dark brown run through with mahogany light, a figure that reddens when the light grazes it, and beneath it all the red thread of the spacers, surfacing like heat that never quite dies. In the palm it is a tamed fire, quiet and patient, waiting for the next ray of sun before it glows once more.
Some bird passed through here. Nothing is known about it beyond what it left: its feathers, dropped one by one along the spring and chiseled into the steel with their delicate barbs and taut shafts. They trail down the full length of the spring like the wake of a flight, broken by diamond-shaped openings where the light still slips through. Only a bird of embers could shed feathers like these, born in the fire of the wood, cooled in the metal and fixed there mid-flight, at the very instant they touched the knife.
So that nothing flies away, the piece has been banded: at mid-handle, a beaded ring rimmed in red closes around it, chiseled dot by dot, slowly, the way you would engrave a promise you intend to keep. Ornithologists do the same with a rare bird, banding it and recording it before setting it free. From the top, the bee in her robe of light keeps an eye on the scattered feathers; she alone ever saw the bird that lost them. “Ember Feather” holds that passage in a single hand, the glowing memory of a flight nobody witnessed, set for good in steel and in the burning color of the wood.
