Reliquary of Dawn: Laguiole Knife with Full Pink Elder Burl Handle – Chiseled Bee – Copper Liners with Set Stones

989€

There is only one “Reliquary of Dawn,” and it was handmade at every stage by one cutler at Laguiole en Aubrac. The full handle, in elder burl dyed pink, carries the color of the sky in the minutes before sunrise: a saturated fuchsia that turns violet deep in the grain and lightens toward raspberry on the high points, its shade changing with the smallest movement of the hand. Wherever the wood is tightest, the dye did not take, and broad stretches of cream and honey open up, like the first gaps of light in a night that is finally ending.

At the head, the bee is botanical through and through. Two round, polished buds top it like a pair of eyes not yet open. Under those buds, pointed leaves fan out in a rosette, every vein finely chiseled, and the body is simply a bundle of pliant stems that cross over, loop together, and break out again into foliage. Rather than a bee resting on a plant, this is a bee grown out of one.

Two copper liners enclose the spring along its full length, their warm metal answering the pink of the wood without clashing with it. Between them, two chiseled motifs take turns: long almond shapes, each ringed by its own cord of beads, and fans lined with tightly packed ribs, like palm leaves folded shut. At intervals, pink stones in copper bezels punctuate the line and give the ornament its pauses, much as gems do on a piece of jewelry.

“Reliquary of Dawn” is intended for Laguiole collectors who want a piece precious in every detail, its wood, metal, and stones all in perfect agreement. The deep pink of the burl, the stone-set copper liners, the chiseled spring, and the leafy bee come together in a richly worked design, made to be enjoyed by the eye and the hand in equal parts.

Laguiole en Aubrac Knife with Full Pink Elder Burl Handle

The colors of the sky just before daybreak belong to this Laguiole. Its full handle in pink-dyed elder burl is a deep fuchsia, violet where the grain dips and raspberry where it rises, opened by wide areas of cream and honey where the tighter fibers refused the dye.

Copper liners frame the spring, on which beaded almonds alternate with ribbed fans and small pink stones are set in copper bezels at intervals. At the head stands a bee made wholly of foliage, with two buds, a rosette of leaves, and a body of intertwined stems.

Pink wood like the sky before first light, a setting of copper and stone, a bee putting out leaves at the top: "Reliquary of Dawn" is as precious as a shrine yet made to be held. Only one exists, and it will not be repeated. If you want a Laguiole with the soul of a jewel, this is it.

Fuchsia sinking to violet and lifting to raspberry, the dyed elder burl gives way to broad, quiet fields of cream and honey where the grain grows tight. Along the spring, almond shapes ringed in beads alternate with finely ribbed fans, and small pink stones sit in copper bezels between the two copper liners. Crowning it all, the bee is pure vegetation, with two rounded buds over a ring of veined leaves, its body nothing but twining stems.

reliquary of dawn: laguiole knife with full pink elder burl handle – chiseled bee – copper liners with set stones

Each morning brings a brief hour when the night has not yet gone and the day has not fully come. This knife has kept that precise color. Down in the folds of the grain, the fuchsia handle tips into violet, then climbs back to raspberry along the crests, like a sky hesitating before it commits. Then, in places, the color halts abruptly. The wood was too tight to absorb it and has left wide stretches of cream and honey, the first openings through which the day will eventually break.

That early hour has been placed in a casket. Copper liners run along both sides of the spring over its whole length, a warm metal that looks as if it were born of the same sunrise as the wood and that answers it without ever contradicting it. Between them the decoration takes its time: long almonds circled by a cord of beads, ribbed fans like folded palms, and now and then a pink stone in its copper bezel, set there like the jewels on a precious object you only open with great care.

What the reliquary shelters is a plant that has become an insect. There is nothing left of an ordinary body: two round buds crown the bee like eyes still closed, veined leaves bloom beneath them in a rosette, and all the rest is stems that braid together, tie themselves in loops, and burst back into foliage. This bee is growth itself, the bud opening, the beginning that every dawn announces. “Reliquary of Dawn” lives entirely in that meeting of a wood colored like the sky before daybreak, a casket of copper and stones, and a bee at the top turning green again.

Pink Elder Burl

Chance alone draws the figure of this wood. On swellings along an elder trunk, the fibers stop growing straight and instead tighten and curl inward, producing a dense, unpredictable network of swirls and close-set eyes. Stabilization then fixes that structure deep inside the wood before the dye is applied.

Pink dye gives this burl the color of a dawn sky, a deep fuchsia that darkens toward violet wherever the grain is hollow and brightens to raspberry on the high points, while the densest parts of the wood, which hold less dye, open into broad fields of cream and honey. No other handle will ever show this exact figure, and that interplay of color and light is the whole character of "Reliquary of Dawn."

A fuchsia this vivid, opened by such wide fields of honey, cannot be planned. It happens only when wood and dye meet in exactly this way, and alongside set stones and a leafy bee it makes a knife that exists once. Let it go, and it will not come back.
