Two-Material Laguiole Bee Back Knife in Desert Ironwood Burl and Copper-Toned Carbon Fiber – Spring Chiseled with Ivy Leaves

1049€

There is only one of this Bee Back, made wholly by hand by seasoned cutlers at Laguiole en Aubrac. On the blade side, the copper-toned carbon fiber draws you in at first sight: under a dark, hammered-looking weave, a copper-colored network surfaces scale by scale, like a mineral hide that wakes up in patches under the light. On the bee side, desert ironwood burl replies in a very deep brown, close to black, its figure showing only when you tilt the piece. A polished central bolster ringed with red spacers ties the two materials together with restraint.

The bee has moved to the far end of the handle, a spot tradition never gave it. Finely worked, rising just high enough to catch the thumb, it is the whole piece in miniature: the Laguiole emblem reinvented as a precision part, built and adjusted to perform thousands of times as accurately as on day one. First it gets admired, then it gets used, and neither pleasure fades.

Two positions, one movement. Closed, the blade is locked: the bee holds it captive in the handle, and neither the jostling of a hike nor the bottom of a duffel will shift it a millimeter. A flick of the thumb changes all that. The blade lifts slightly, rising just far enough above the handle to be pinched, then swings out to the forced notch. The spring running this sequence is chiseled with overlapping ivy leaves from one end to the other, dressing Laguiole’s most modern mechanism in the most classic of patterns.

If dark, exacting pieces are your thing, this one delivers. Two characterful materials with muted reflections, chiseled ivy winding up the spring and a locking system without equivalent come together in a hand-assembled example that will never be reproduced, at Laguiole en Aubrac or by any other maker. Built for daily carry, it is finished like something meant for a display case.

Born in the workshops of the Laguiole en Aubrac manufacture, the Bee Back reinvents the Laguiole knife: its emblematic bee becomes a mechanism and locks the blade, an innovation crowned at the IWA Knife Award 2023.

Laguiole en Aubrac Bee Back Knife in Copper-Toned Carbon Fiber and Desert Ironwood Burl

Dark elegance is the theme of this Bee Back. Copper-toned carbon fiber, its scales breaking the surface, takes the blade end; a deep brown desert ironwood burl takes the bee end; a polished central bolster with red spacers links the two.

Its spring, chiseled with overlapping ivy leaves, powers the mechanism that made the model famous: the tilting bee locks the blade shut, lifts it a little when released, and only then lets it open to the forced notch. It is a Laguiole en Aubrac exclusive, recognized well beyond France.

Here the ivy of tradition climbs over the most modern mechanism in Laguiole knifemaking: a dark, copper-toned, precise piece, locked by its bee and owned by no one else.

Beneath a dark hammered weave, the carbon fiber gives off copper-toned glints that come and go with the light, set against the near-black depth of the ironwood burl. Ivy leaves overlap one after another along the chiseled spring, climbing its full length. Right under the thumb, the finely worked bee waits at the rear of the handle, a small steel accent at the far end of all that darkness.

It all starts with the movement. Your thumb finds the bee at the end of the handle and tilts it, and the blade answers by easing gently out of its housing, ready and waiting. Try it once and it is easy to see why the Bee Back made waves among knife lovers. In 2023 this tilting-bee lock received the Innovation first prize of the IWA Knife Award, at the biggest international show in the business. This piece carries that award-winning movement, and every part of it was fitted by hand at Laguiole en Aubrac.

The materials, meanwhile, are all about depth. The copper-toned carbon fiber looks like a skin of cooled embers, copper-colored scales held under a dark hammered weave that flare here and there when light passes across them. The desert ironwood burl pushes even deeper into the dark, a near-black brown with hidden figure, a wood that few others can rival for density or endurance. The single flash of brightness on the piece comes from what lies between the two, a polished bolster framed in red.

Hard angles, cut facets and a faceted blade give the design a taut, sober modernity. Two hundred years of curves are left behind, yet the method stays put, with assembly, chiseling and polishing entrusted to one cutler. And climbing the spring, there is ivy. The ancients already read it as an emblem of faithfulness and attachment, and knifemakers have chiseled it for generations. Here it creeps upward, one leaf after another, across the most innovative piece Laguiole en Aubrac has ever produced. Tradition quite literally clinging to modernity: that is why this Bee Back stands out, even next to its siblings in the series.

Copper-Toned Carbon Fiber

Copper-toned carbon fiber brings two unlikely partners together: cutting-edge composite on one hand, the timeless warmth of copper coloring on the other. Within its dark, hammered-looking body, a copper-colored network breaks the surface in scales, so the finish looks dull one moment and alive with embers the next, depending on the angle of the light. Like any technical carbon, it offers a rigidity and lightness natural materials cannot reach, and every sheet comes out with a pattern the next one will not repeat.

Dimensionally stable and untroubled by humidity, it lends the blade end a quiet personality that only reveals itself up close, the sign of a piece built for the long haul instead of for show.

Desert Ironwood Burl

Ironwood owes its name to an extraordinary density and hardness that rank it among the toughest woods on the planet and leave only the hardiest tools able to shape it. Its burl, which grows from swellings on the tree, is rare even by burl standards. For this handle, the darkest tones were chosen: a brown so deep it verges on black, with figure that only gives itself up under low, slanting light. The wood needs neither treatment nor varnish to polish up to a deep sheen.

Held in the hand, it anchors the rear of the handle with a full, reassuring weight, close to the mechanical bee. It lives up to its chiseled motif, too: like ivy, it grips and stays.

Shadow and copper tones, assembled by a single pair of hands: this Bee Back is meant to ride in one pocket for years, and later in the pocket of whoever inherits it.
