Memory of the Fossilized Oak: Laguiole Knife with Full Handle in Bog Oak – Chiseled Bee – Chiseled Spring

1105€

The handle of “Memory of the Fossilized Oak” is cut from an oak that went down into the peat of a bog several millennia ago and was kept there, safe from rot. A single cutler at Laguiole en Aubrac created this unique knife, doing every step by hand. Known as morta, or bog oak, the wood was slowly transformed by water and earth over that immense stretch of time. It came out a deep ash gray, combed with tight fibers in alternating pale and dark lines, so restrained it looks almost like stone. The full handle shows this wood along its entire length, and on its side the shepherd’s cross, set in as a pattern of stainless steel dots, places the traditional Laguiole emblem on a material from the depths of time.

Most of the labor on this knife went into the spring, which is chiseled with a frieze of foliage over its full length. The cutler outlined each wreath of leaves separately before hollowing it out vein by vein, while the supple stems cross one another in a regular diamond lattice. Weaving them this way calls for several depths of cut, so that each stem can pass over or under the next, and no stroke can be redone.

Between the two polished liners, the frieze unrolls from one end of the back to the other without ever quite repeating, and climbs as far as the base of the bee. The bee itself is chiseled with the same rigor. Its wings open as scaled fans, divided like two tiny branches of leaves on a finely matted ground, and its ringed body, bordered by twin lines of beads, comes down to a sharp tip, held in a frame that is almost heraldic. Every detail has been followed through to the final scale, in direct continuity with the spring.

“Memory of the Fossilized Oak” is aimed at Laguiole collectors who want to see chiseling taken as far as it can go. Ash-gray morta from the depths of time, the leafy frieze along the spring, the fan-winged bee, and the inlaid cross add up to a deeply unified whole, meant to be enjoyed with the eyes and in the hand alike.

SKU: LEA PU - PM12 MORTA MEM CH FOS Category: Category: One-of-a-Kind Laguiole Knives

Created in 1829 in the small village of Laguiole for local farmers, this knife has risen to become one of the most celebrated in France, distinguished by its emblematic bee, a symbol of prestige and quality.

Laguiole en Aubrac Full-Handle Knife in Bog Oak

In this Laguiole, chiseling reaches a rare level of accomplishment. The full handle is bog oak, oak that spent thousands of years in a peat bog, now ash gray and densely streaked, and it bears the shepherd's cross inlaid as stainless steel dots.

Interlaced foliage covers the spring end to end, every wreath outlined on its own and hollowed vein by vein, the stems crossing in diamonds at several depths. The bee picks up the same work with scaled, fan-shaped wings and a ringed body set between beaded borders.

  • 4.7" (12 cm) full handle in bog oak, no bolsters. Inlaid shepherd's cross.
  • Exclusive model: one of a kind, never to be reproduced.
  • 3.9" (10 cm) blade in Sandvik 12C27MOD stainless steel.

Under the graver, an oak lost to the bog for millennia comes back into leaf, wreath by wreath along the steel, with a bee alighting at the top. This wood, this frieze, and this bee meet only once. If chiseling at this level is what you collect, this is the piece to own.

Ash gray and finely streaked, the morta carries its age quietly, lit only by the cross of inlaid steel dots on its side. Along the back, wreaths of leaves hollowed vein by vein interlace in diamonds, passing over and under one another at several depths. At the top, the bee opens two scaled, fan-shaped wings like miniature sprays of foliage, its ringed body tapering between twin rows of beads.

memory of the fossilized oak: laguiole knife with full handle in bog oak – chiseled bee – chiseled spring

It all starts with a wood that has crossed the ages. Morta is oak that fell into the peat millennia ago and was slowly kept from decay by water and soil, until it reached this ashen gray, streaked with tight fibers, that no living species can match. Holding it means holding a tree that spent centuries sealed away from the air, reduced to its fiber and compressed by time, with a forgotten season behind every streak. Against it, the steel points of the shepherd’s cross gleam like a handful of stars over a land gone dark, an old emblem resting on a far older material.

On this sleeping oak, the foliage returns. Wreath after wreath, the cutler has chiseled leaves along the spring, every cluster outlined and then hollowed vein by vein, every stem crossed with the next in a diamond pattern, worked at several depths so that one stem can slip beneath another. On a strip of steel this narrow, a few millimeters at most, such work tolerates no mistake and never quite repeats, so no wreath is a twin of the one before it. You end up following the frieze with your thumb, the way you would trace the line of a branch.

At the very top, life comes back in full. The bee spreads its wings as two scaled fans, small sprays of leaves laid over a matte ground, and its ringed body, flanked by two rows of beads, narrows downward to a point, as if mounted in a coat of arms. Finished down to the last scale, it is the one thing this revived foliage still lacked: an insect alighting on the leaves. Read the knife upward, wood first, then the spring, then the bee, and the story is complete: a tree the bog claimed thousands of years ago, its leaves made green again by the graver, and life settling on it once more.

Bog Oak

Morta forms when an oak sinks into a peat bog and lies there for thousands of years. With no oxygen and a highly acidic environment, the wood is preserved rather than broken down, then slowly mineralized by water and earth. It emerges a deep ash gray, its dense fibers streaked in alternating light and dark lines, a coloring and a grain pattern found in no living tree.

Once dug up, this wood is dense, stable, and especially hard to shape, which limits it to exceptional pieces. Its sober, almost stony character makes it a perfect setting for chiseled decoration. Here, the gray of the morta steps back and lets the leafy frieze on the spring take all the light, like an ancient oak whose leaves have returned.

A wood that needed thousands of years to become what it is, and a frieze cut leaf after leaf: neither can be ordered a second time. Only one "Memory of the Fossilized Oak" exists, and it is ready for its collector.
