Two-Material Laguiole Bee Back Knife in Carbon Fiber and Desert Ironwood Burl – Chiseled Spring and Central Bolster

1049€

Built entirely by hand by Laguiole en Aubrac cutlers at the top of their craft, this Bee Back is the only one of its kind. Its two-material handle flips the usual order. Carbon fiber leads on the blade side, dark and swept with golden swirls that look like eddies of bronze stopped mid-turn. Desert ironwood burl takes over toward the bee, its deep brown figure lit by orange glints that shimmer at every tilt. In the middle, a smooth central bolster, polished to a mirror and ringed with red spacers, gives the eye a crisp pause between two restless materials.

At the rear of the handle you will find the bee, finely engraved and raised just enough for the thumb to find it blind. Calling it an ornament would sell it short, because everything about this Bee Back depends on it, from its exact tilt to fitting held to a tenth of a millimeter so it keeps doing its job day after day without developing play. Tradition had frozen the bee into an emblem. This piece sets it in motion and gives it top billing.

It takes one second. The bee tilts and the blade changes state. Locked in the closed position, the blade stays put in the handle whatever a pocket or bag throws at it. Unlocked, it lifts slightly clear of its slot, presents itself to your fingers and opens to the traditional forced notch. The spring that drives this mechanism is a showpiece in its own right, chiseled from end to end with a twist of fine ribs punctuated by tiny dots, so the hardest-working part of the piece is also its most ornate.

This Bee Back appeals to anyone who enjoys contrast kept firmly in hand: carbon against ironwood, gold tones against ember tones, a polished bolster against a chiseled spring, all gathered around the most original mechanism Laguiole knifemaking has seen since the very beginning. It asks to be picked up at least as often as it is looked at, and no other piece, even in its own series, will ever match it.

Born in the workshops of the Laguiole en Aubrac manufacture, the Bee Back reinvents the Laguiole knife: its emblematic bee becomes a mechanism and locks the blade, an innovation crowned at the IWA Knife Award 2023.

Laguiole en Aubrac Bee Back Knife in Carbon Fiber and Desert Ironwood Burl

This Bee Back is built on contrast: carbon fiber laced with golden swirls toward the blade, desert ironwood burl lit with orange toward the bee, and in the center a mirror-polished bolster ringed with red spacers.

A spring chiseled with a twist of fine ribs powers the signature mechanism: the tilting bee holds the folded blade locked, then nudges it slightly upward once released, before it swings open to the forced notch. That move is what earned the Bee Back its international honor.

Carbon swirled with golden tones, set against glowing ironwood, reconciled by a bee that controls everything: a contrast you hold, put to work, and keep.

The carbon fiber catches the light in bronze-gold eddies, while the ironwood burl answers with deep brown figure that warms to orange as the piece moves, the two meeting at a mirror-bright bolster. A twisted rope of fine chiseled ribs and tiny dots runs the full length of the spring. At the very back, the engraved bee stands slightly proud of the handle, exactly where the thumb expects it.

Fire runs through both halves of this handle, and each half tells it differently. On the blade side, the carbon fiber spins golden swirls through its dark resin, bronze-colored eddies held still like sparks caught in midair. On the bee side, the ironwood burl prefers a slow burn: deep brown crossed by orange glints that shimmer and wander with every change of light. The polished bolster plays the hyphen between them, one bright strip that both divides and connects.

The Bee Back’s outline sharpens that character further. The blade is cut in taut facets and the handle in flat planes, with none of the rounded curves the classic Laguiole has kept for two centuries, and the design that results is contemporary, almost graphic, recognizable at a glance. Every step of the making, though, still happens in the Espalion workshop: the chiseled spring, the bolster set to within a tenth of a millimeter, assembly and polishing handled by a single pair of hands. New lines, century-old method.

Then there is the mechanism, the feature that built the model’s reputation. The tilting bee that locks the closed blade and guides it as it opens grew out of an idea from one of the house’s cutlers, and the knifemaking world took notice: it earned first place in the Innovation category at the 2023 IWA Knife Award, presented in Nuremberg at the trade’s largest international show. What this piece carries is that award-winning mechanism itself, the original rather than a copy or a spin-off, assembled by hand on an example that will belong to one owner only.

Carbon Fiber with Golden Swirls

Developed for aircraft and auto racing, carbon fiber brings a knife a rigidity and low weight that no natural material comes close to. The version used here goes a step further: golden swirls curl freely through the dark body of the composite, bronze-toned eddies fixed in the resin, their pattern set at the moment of molding and impossible to repeat.

Cool at first and quick to warm, stable over time and unbothered by humidity, it gives the blade side a technical footing and a quiet shine that draws the eye without overwhelming it.

Desert Ironwood Burl

Few woods on earth are as dense as ironwood, which actually sinks in water, and its burl is the rarest form it takes. Here the grain winds into tight figure: a deep brown shot with orange glints that drift as the light changes, the way an ember brightens when someone blows on it. So hard is this wood that it polishes to a deep shine with no finish or treatment needed.

Held in the palm, it gives the back of the handle a full, reassuring weight, right where the mechanical bee works: one of the hardest woods in the plant world, serving the most delicate movement Laguiole en Aubrac has designed.

This Bee Back brings the frozen gold tones of carbon and the ember glow of ironwood together on a strictly one-of-a-kind example, made to be kept and one day handed down.
