Son of the Sun: Laguiole Knife in Mustard Yellow Mammoth Molar – Sculpted Bee – Chiseled Spring and Bolsters

1659€

A handle the color of old gold and a bee that wears an open flower like a small sun: put the two together and you have “Son of the Sun.” It is a unique piece, and one cutler at the Laguiole en Aubrac manufacture made it by hand from beginning to end. The mustard yellow mammoth molar has been sawn to expose the stacked plates of the fossil tooth, and they file across the handle in close bands of deep amber, honey, and creamy white, interrupted here and there by darker streaks that break up the glow. A black spacer draws a firm line between fossil and stainless steel liners, which keeps the edge of the handle crisp.

The bee at the head is composed like a ceremonial pectoral. An open blossom sits at the very top between two little ribbed fans. Below it the body steps down in a ladder of even rungs, while an almond-shaped wing opens on each side, divided by a central vein, polished on one side of it and stippled on the other. Two more fans close the figure at the base, and the symmetry is exact.

The spring takes up the work without a single pause. Just under the bee, a framed and stippled panel sets things in motion, and from there a garland of slender, lance-shaped leaves twines around a wavy stem, the leaves leaning alternately toward one edge and then the other, each one outlined and veined individually. The garland covers the full length, climbs onto the rear bolster, and ends there in stippled triangles. Since both bolsters are chiseled as well, the ornament wraps the whole piece and the steel never goes bare.

Collectors who look for a ceremonial piece, one where material and chiseling speak with a single voice, will find it here. Mustard yellow molar, a black spacer, steel liners, a garland of leaves running down the spring, and a flower-crowned bee hold together with rare poise, as pleasing in the hand as they are to the eye.

Laguiole en Aubrac Knife in Mustard Yellow Mammoth Molar

Old gold is the color of "Son of the Sun." On its mustard yellow mammoth molar handle, the plates of the fossil tooth form tight bands of amber, honey, and cream crossed by dark veins, with a black spacer marking the transition to the stainless steel liners.

On the spring, lance-shaped leaves wind around a wavy stem, each outlined and veined separately, before the garland climbs onto the rear bolster and finishes in stippled triangles. Above it all sits the bee, with its ladder-rung body, its almond wings in polish and stipple, and an open flower on its head.

Old gold in the handle, leaves wrapped around the entire knife, and at the top a bee carrying its own star. This piece exists once and will never be repeated. For a Laguiole with the presence of a ceremonial object, look no further.

Turned in the palm, the molar glows mustard and honey between cream stripes, while dark veins and a black spacer keep every line sharp. Slender leaves twine along the spring around their wavy stem and fold into stippled triangles on the rear bolster. Up top, the bee holds perfect symmetry, wings half polished and half stippled, beneath an open blossom.

son of the sun: laguiole knife in mustard yellow mammoth molar – sculpted bee – chiseled spring and bolsters

Some knives feel as though they had an owner long before you. This one has the color of old gold, a deep mustard yellow streaked with amber, honey, and cream, where a few dark veins break the light. Nobody drew those stripes. Each is a plate of mammoth molar, added one at a time while the animal lived and then guarded by the frost for thousands of years. It could be a relic carried home from some temple, where gold was valued for its meaning more than its price.

The chiseling has the feel of a ritual. A stippled panel just below the bee works like a doorway, and through it a garland of slender leaves escapes along the spring, leaning from edge to edge around a stem that winds without end. The cutler shaped every leaf individually, cutting its outline, hollowing it, then adding the veins, on a strip of steel just millimeters across, where a slip could never be undone. Nor does the garland stop when the spring runs out: it climbs onto the rear bolster and closes in stippled triangles, so the ornament goes all the way around the knife.

Everything climbs toward a single point, the bee, as symmetrical and solemn as a goldsmith’s pectoral. Its body is a ladder of rungs, its almond wings are shared between polish and stipple, ribbed fans frame it top and bottom, and the open flower on its head rides there like a star. Picture the knife held up toward the sky, the bee pointed at the sun, and a crowd waiting, breath held, for the bee to break away and take flight. “Son of the Sun” belongs to that rare kind of object which, once opened, lets you know it was never entirely a tool.

Mustard Yellow Mammoth Molar

Untreated, mammoth molar keeps to a range between cream and brown. The mustard yellow on this handle is the work of stabilization: the fossil is porous and brittle, so before it is shaped, resin is drawn deep into it under vacuum and carries the color in with it. Underneath, the material is exactly what it always was, a grinding tooth of the long-extinct woolly mammoth, recovered from frozen ground in Alaska, Siberia, or Canada.

The yellow conceals none of the structure. Dentin plates tucked into folds of enamel and cemented in place, among the most complex arrangements found in any animal, still read clearly as separate bands of amber, honey, and cream, and a mammoth grew several generations of these teeth in its lifetime. Once stabilized, the molar is dense, rot-proof, and long-lasting, cool on first contact, with a mineral polish no wood achieves. On "Son of the Sun," the bands carry over from one handle scale to the other, so light slides down the whole grip the moment you turn it in your palm.

A tinted molar with bands this clearly drawn, under chiseling that circles the entire knife, will not come together a second time. If "Son of the Sun" speaks to you, there is no other one to wait for.
