“Fern Print” is a one-off Laguiole that one cutler at Laguiole en Aubrac saw through alone, working entirely by hand. The full handle is carved as one continuous piece of desert ironwood burl, a deep brown that edges toward black, lit by amber and copper flames and polished to the sheen of hard stone. There are no bolsters, so the rounded profile flows without a break from head to heel, and the wild figure of the burl gets the whole stage to itself. Set into the side of the burl, the shepherd’s cross is picked out in small stainless steel dots, the traditional signature of a Laguiole.

The bee is drawn in a frankly stylized way. Its body rises in a ladder of regular rungs that grow finer toward the head, each one placed with real precision. Long, slender wings carry a finely beaded grain that softens the light rather than throwing it back in flashes. Nothing here imitates nature, and that graphic discipline lends the insect a solemn, almost iconic bearing that is easy to recognize.

Along the spring, a frieze of ferns has been chiseled in relief: fan-shaped leaves overlapping one after another over its full length, standing out from a dark ground between the two polished liners. Description

Think of a woodland at nightfall. The hand travels along one smooth, rounded sweep with no bolsters to interrupt it and meets the steel dots of the shepherd’s cross, small sparks of light in all that dark wood, like a few stars seen between the branches. At the top of the handle the bee is perfectly still, as though it had always rested there. Its body climbs rung by rung to a narrow head, and its long, beaded wings hold the light more than they reflect it, with the mellow glow of old lacquer. Once polished, ironwood takes on a luster close to that of hard stone and feels smooth and mineral under the fingers.
