Undergrowth Hive: Laguiole Knife in Ebony and Stabilized Poplar Burl – Sculpted Bee – Chiseled Spring and Central Bolster

1459€

“Undergrowth Hive” is a Laguiole knife made once and only once, entirely by hand, by the most seasoned cutlers in the Laguiole en Aubrac workshops. Two materials share its handle. Ebony brings a deep black buffed to a mirror shine, and poplar burl brings a luminous green with bronze glints, a color produced by the resin stabilization, as this burl is naturally cream to light beige. Red spacers run between them for the whole length of the handle, a bright, tight thread that sharpens every line of the piece from heel to head.

This bee leaves realism behind altogether. Its wings are engraved with an even crosshatch that sparkles like a checkerboard, and its body grows straight out of the stem on the spring: the uppermost tuft of a young shoot whose leaves are just parting. The plant literally becomes the bee, and the delicacy of the chiseling turns that transformation into the signature of the piece, a choice cutlers rarely make.

The leafy stem chiseled on the spring climbs its entire length from heel to head, unfolding leaf after leaf in a steady upward motion. Midway, it passes over the central bolster, worked on both faces with hexagonal cells on a carefully grained ground that sets each one apart, then resumes its rise toward the bee. Liners guilloché with fine ripples frame the climb, and on both sides the red edge of the spacers doubles that frame along the steel.

“Undergrowth Hive” belongs with Laguiole enthusiasts who have a feel for botanical pieces. Shadowy ebony set against bright green burl, a chiseled stem that grows until it flowers as a bee, a hive engraved at the center: each element feeds the next, in a lively, coherent knife that rewards a long look and daily use alike.

Laguiole en Aubrac Ebony and Poplar Burl Knife

"Undergrowth Hive" is a botanical Laguiole composed like a forest in three colors: the deep black of ebony, the shimmering green of stabilized poplar burl and, binding them along the full handle, the red thread of the spacers.

From heel to head, the spring carries a chiseled leafy stem that rises across a bolster honeycombed with grained hexagons and ends by blossoming as a bee, with crosshatched wings and a body of opening leaves. Rippled guilloché liners border the whole ascent.

With "Undergrowth Hive," the hive trilogy finds its third horizon in the forest, following the icy white and the amber gold, a place where life pushes up from shade toward light and the stem itself turns into the bee.

Mirror-black ebony meets the bronze-flecked green of the poplar burl, with a vivid red line of spacers running between them. Up the spring, the stem opens leaf by leaf, crosses the grained honeycomb at the center of the handle and becomes a bee at the head. Its wings carry a fine crosshatch that glints like a checkerboard, and its body is a cluster of young leaves.

Close your hand around it and you are holding a forest floor. Ebony plays the dark soil of the woods, the dense shade where everything starts and the eye cannot yet make anything out. Poplar burl answers with the green light that slips through the leaves at the hottest hour of the day, restless and shimmering, spotted with sun. And between the two, all along the handle, the red thread of the spacers plays the part of sap, life moving from shade to light without a single break. Three colors are all it takes to bring in an entire forest, deep and silent.

A stem has taken root in this undergrowth. It begins in darkness and climbs the spring like the beanstalk in the old tale reaching for the clouds, leaf over leaf, taking its time, certain of where it is going. Partway up it meets a hive: the hexagonal cells of the central bolster, built right there in the deep woods, the way wild bees hide their combs in hollow trees. The stem grazes them as it goes, perhaps draws a little nourishment, then calmly carries on toward the light.

The transformation waits at the summit, where the stem flowers into a bee. Its crosshatched wings open wide and its body is made of leaves just unfurling, grown from the plant itself. Plant and insect merge into one, as in those woods where flower and bee are so closely bound that no one can say which needs the other more. The north gave the trilogy its white and the south its gold; “Undergrowth Hive” adds the third horizon, the forest, where hives have no owner and life keeps climbing from shadow into light.

Ebony

Ebony is the black wood every other black wood is held up against. It comes from trees that grow very slowly and ranks among the densest timbers on earth, heavy enough to sink in water, while its extremely fine grain accepts a deep, nearly mirror polish no other wood can equal. Craftsmen have reserved it since antiquity for their most precious work, from royal marquetry to piano keys. On this piece it supplies the shade of the undergrowth, a solid, even black that drinks in light as readily as the neighboring burl gives it back.

Ebony surprises the hand with its weight and smoothness. Heavy, sleek and silky-cool at first contact, it gives the knife a settled feel and a balance you notice right away, and it crosses the generations with its strength intact, as old ebony pieces still sound today can attest.

Stabilized Poplar Burl

Poplar burl is born in the swollen growths of the trunk, whose fibers wind into tight whorls instead of running straight. That disorder produces a shimmering figure scattered with little knots, which moves with every change of angle. Vacuum stabilization then soaks each fiber with resin, and here it is that process that gives the bright green, the raw burl itself being no darker than cream or light beige. The wood comes out denser and steadier than it could ever be raw.

Smooth and full under the fingers, the stabilized burl shrugs off changes in humidity. Because no two burls match, this particular foliage exists only once in the world, on the knife in front of you.

Choosing "Undergrowth Hive" means taking home a fragment of forest to keep, with its shade, its light and its sap, all closed up inside a knife. It is meant to be handed down the way a good tale is.
