Laguiole knife handles made of snakewood are highly appreciated for their beauty and durability. Snakewood is an exotic wood native to South America, particularly Guyana and Suriname. This wood is often called "Snakewood" because of its distinctive patterns that resemble a snake's skin.

Snakewood is characterized by a speckled reddish-brown color, as well as a high density that makes it heavier than most other woods. It is also very resistant and hard, capable of withstanding strong pressure. Indeed, snakewood was originally used for the production of printing characters, as it could resist the wear caused by printing on paper.

For the manufacture of Laguiole knife handles, only the finest parts of the tree trunk, approximately 15 to 25 cm in diameter, are used. This size limitation explains why snakewood is mainly used for small artisanal objects.
