Hiding behind majestic irises in a swamp, the king, in gratitude, made this flower his emblem, naming it “Louis’s flower”. Others recount that Clovis chose the yellow swamp iris following his victory over the Visigoths. Although its presence dates back to the Carolingian era, the iris (or fleur de lys) became a royal symbol under Louis VII.
