Laguiole Corkscrews
Every Laguiole corkscrew you’ll find here is handmade in France by Laguiole en Aubrac, with a foil cutter, a worm and a lever that fold into one handle. You may know this folding design as a wine key or a waiter’s corkscrew, the kind restaurant servers carry in their aprons. A Laguiole wine opener handles beer and soda as well, because the foil cutter also lifts bottle caps.
Each Laguiole en Aubrac sommelier corkscrew opens a bottle the same way, so choosing one is mostly about the handle. Wood and horn handles put the natural material front and center, while marquetry handles bring pattern and color, some inlaid with a bunch of grapes. It also goes by sommelier knife, after the wine steward who opens and serves the bottles in a restaurant. To carry a corkscrew on a pocket knife instead, see Laguiole Knives with Corkscrew.

Olive wood, buffalo horn or vinestock
Olive wood gives a satin handle in blond to honey tones, with darker veins that run differently on each corkscrew. Buffalo horn comes out a glossy black after polishing, and some handles show gray or amber streaks. Vinestock is the lower trunk of old vines, dug up in southern France once they've stopped producing grapes, and is stabilized with resin. It's a knotty brown wood, different on every handle, that suits a wine opener well. Go with olive wood for a soft sheen, buffalo horn if you like shine, or vinestock to bring the vineyard to the table. To see these handles up close, read the guide Laguiole en Aubrac Corkscrews.

What a Laguiole wine key does
A Laguiole wine key holds the three tools you need to open a bottle of wine. You score the foil below the lip with the cutter, drive the worm into the cork, then brace the lever on the rim and draw the cork out in one steady pull. Folded away, it slips into a pocket, an apron or a kitchen drawer, ready for a tasting or a picnic. Factories are free to use the Laguiole name on corkscrews, and plenty of them do. Each French corkscrew on this page, by contrast, is handmade in France by Laguiole en Aubrac.
Plain handles or marquetry
A plain handle shows one material from end to end, so you can pick your wine key by color and grain alone. Marquetry handles fit pieces of different materials into a design, from a checkerboard to a bunch of grapes. They suit someone who collects wine tools, or a bar cart where the corkscrew stays on display between bottles. The foil cutter, worm and lever are the same in both styles, so the only question is how you want your Laguiole corkscrew to look in your hand and on the counter.
Wine key questions
What is a wine key?
A wine key is a folding corkscrew with a foil cutter, a worm and a lever in one handle, also called a waiter's corkscrew or sommelier knife. Any corkscrew pulls a cork, but this is the compact kind that folds flat, unlike winged or T-handle models. Laguiole en Aubrac makes its wine keys by hand in France, each with a cap lifter built into the foil cutter.
How do you open a bottle with a waiter's corkscrew?
Open the foil cutter, run it around the neck just under the lip, and peel the foil away. Center the tip of the worm on the cork and turn until one twist is left showing. Rest the lever on the rim, then lift the handle to ease the cork out. Every Laguiole en Aubrac corkscrew comes with instructions for use, so the first bottle is easy.
What is the best Laguiole wine opener?
The one whose handle you like most, because every Laguiole en Aubrac corkscrew has the same foil cutter, worm and lever. Each is handmade in France and differs only in its handle: olive wood, buffalo horn, vinestock or one of the other woods, horns and marquetry patterns. Pick the material you'll enjoy holding each time you open a bottle.
Each corkscrew ships with care instructions. Hand wash it, dry it promptly, and never use the dishwasher, which can damage wood and horn.
