Phoenix Regalia feels like a knife born from embers and light. The full handle in multicolor-stained elder burl catches the eye before anything else: colors overlap and answer each other as if several fires had left their traces in the wood. Each side seems to tell a different scene, somewhere between the glow of dusk and the shimmer of cut stones.
At the top, the bee has become a jewel. Engraved and finely sculpted, you can clearly make out her two eyes and the wings carved downward, ready to open for flight. She doesn’t simply rest on the backspring – she reigns over it. The decoration running along that spring evokes the wings of a stylised phoenix, woven together with patient point-by-point punch work. Hollows and raised areas follow one another like the feathers of a firebird, calling to mind an endless rebirth.
Brass liners enriched with copper inserts and small stones set along the spring add even more to this richness. Nothing is left bare: even the inside faces of the brass are engraved at their centre, as if the knife were designed to be admired from every angle.
Phoenix Regalia is not content to be “just” a Laguiole. It is a pocket jewel, a talisman of metal and colour, somewhere between collector’s piece and small work of art you slip into your pocket and carry with you.
