The Midnight Bee Laguiole is a unique piece, entirely hand-crafted by the most skilled cutlers at the Laguiole en Aubrac workshop. Its black poplar burl handle is defined by a dark, understated look enriched by visible veins and shifting tones. The variations in colour and the natural grain give the knife real visual depth and reinforce its serious, self-assured character. Choosing such a deep burl lends Midnight Bee a quiet presence that still leaves a strong impression.

The bee has been given particular care. The upper part of her body is densely hammered with small circular marks, creating a textured surface that feels almost alive. The lower part, decorated with typical longitudinal lines, stretches the silhouette and recalls the traditional pattern of the bee’s body. Her wings are fine and engraved with regular geometric motifs, adding a graphic, architectural edge to the design.

This blend of hammer work, striations and geometric decoration makes the bee instantly recognisable and gives her a singular personality.

Along the back of the knife, the spring carries five motifs in an alternating sequence of two designs, like hive cells repeating along its length. Some seem full, others appear as though they’ve just been emptied. This pattern strengthens the symbolic link to the bee while keeping the overall decoration sober and controlled.

Supported by dark wood and precise, measured ornament, Midnight Bee becomes a Laguiole with a cool, pared-back style – a knife with strong character that never has to shout to be noticed.

It is made for Laguiole enthusiasts who appreciate pieces with depth and near-silent intensity, where the work on wood, bee and spring tells its story without calling on bright colours.

Midnight Bee: Laguiole Pocket Knife in Black Poplar Burl

“Midnight Bee” carries the quiet calm of an object made for the night. Its handle in black poplar burl, crossed with dark veins and marked knots, moves through a palette of deep greys and dense black. The wood calls to mind charred timber or shadowed stone, with just enough sheen to catch the light without ever becoming flashy.

At the top, the bee has a presence that feels more mysterious than rustic: its body is worked with fine hammering and traditional grooves, giving it an almost spider-like silhouette. Along the spine, a series of regular motifs runs down the spring, recalling honeycomb cells – sometimes seeming full, sometimes empty – a discreet echo of the emblem it carries.

“Midnight Bee” is a Laguiole with a restrained, deep aesthetic – created for those who prefer the density of shadow to showier, obvious sparkle.

midnight bee: laguiole pocket knife in black poplar burl

The Midnight Bee feels like a knife born at the hour when hives fall silent and only shadows remain awake. Its handle in black poplar burl is dark and richly veined, with deep lines running through the wood like threads of night caught beneath the surface. The shades move from almost inky charcoal to a muted, matte black, calling to mind a forest after nightfall, when everything becomes silhouette and memory.

At the top, the bee still reigns, but she is no longer the companion of flowers under full sun. The upper part of her body is hammered with tiny, rounded marks, as if each strike had frozen a single droplet of light in the metal. The lower part is carved with classic striations that stretch her shape and give her a quiet, very real sense of motion. Her fine wings are decorated with crisp geometric patterns, sharp and precise, like a drawing etched into the night itself. You can almost imagine that a single breath would be enough to set her free and send her gliding away on a silent flight.

Flowing on from her, the backspring continues this subtle script. It is adorned with five motifs, alternating between two designs, like a row of honeycomb cells – some full, some emptied of their honey. That regular alternation gives the spine a discreet rhythm, a steady heartbeat running through the darkness. Midnight Bee doesn’t seek sparkle or shine; it prefers restraint, depth and the calm assurance of things built to endure.

Blackened Poplar Burl

Poplar burl is a singular wood, shaped by knots, swirls and irregular zones that create an abundance of natural patterns. Blackened here through a carefully controlled dyeing process, it reveals shades ranging from deep grey to charcoal black, with an almost mineral feel. The wood calls to mind dark rock, burnt timber or forest shadows frozen in the grain.

Resin-filled knots and a very pronounced grain create a subtle play of contrasts: some areas catch the light, while others remain deliberately muted. Each block of blackened poplar burl reveals its own unique drawing of hairline cracks, marbling and veins, giving the handle striking visual depth – a perfect match for a character piece like “Shadow Weave.”

This dark colour is not natural, but the result of a stabilisation and dyeing process carried out deep within the wood. It enhances durability while giving the material its cool, contemporary tone. A satin polish completes the work, offering a smooth surface animated by discreet reliefs – where traditional craftsmanship meets a distinctly nocturnal aesthetic.
