It is the wings that draw the eye first, treated like stained glass. Raised veins split each wing into geometric panels, as though pieces of glass had been set in lead, over a finely matted ground that tones the light down. The body, ringed with regular grooves and finished with the same meticulous care, dips its head toward the spring. Description

Imagine the base of an old wall at the hour when the sun begins to warm it. The burl has the same glow. Caramel, mahogany, and russet whirl beneath its polish like flames trapped in amber, and the two steel bolsters around them are as sober as dressed stone. A plant has taken hold here, on a surface as warm and time-softened as the stones of a church. Turn the piece in your hand to watch the wood come to life: each flame sinks or surfaces as the light moves, like stonework at the close of day.

The vine, for its part, keeps rising. Coil after coil, it works its way along the spring, flings out its pointed leaves, picks up momentum again on the bolsters, and goes on climbing the full length of the back. Chiseled in deep relief and cut out coil by coil from its dark ground, it rises the way climbing plants scale the stones of a church, patiently and steadily, lifted by a calm force that nothing rushes and nothing can divert.

Light is what it finds at the top. Spread open, the bee’s wings become two small church windows, their panes framed by steel ribs over a fine grain that softens the daylight instead of reflecting it, with the ringed body rising in the middle like a stone mullion. Here the vine comes to an end, beneath this rose window in miniature, and the knife can be read again from the bottom: warm stone in the ironwood, a plant pushing upward, glass to welcome it. “Celestial Vine” tells of a stubborn stem that rose from the material toward the light, a whole journey you can close your hand around.

Desert Ironwood Burl

Ironwood is one of the heaviest woods on earth, so dense that a piece dropped in water goes straight to the bottom, and it needs no stabilization at all. The tree belongs to the Sonoran Desert, on both sides of the border between Mexico and the American Southwest. Its burls, taken from the knotty growths on the trunk, display a wildly contorted figure in rich colors, from almost black brown to fiery amber and copper, and they shimmer anew at every turn of the light.

Polishing gives ironwood the gleam of hard stone and a cool, mineral smoothness under the fingertips. The same hardness makes it slow and exacting to shape, so it is kept for exceptional knives. Nature never draws the same burl twice, and this one shows its warmest face, a whirl of caramel and mahogany that bathes "Celestial Vine" in the glow of a wall at sunset.
