Set of 1 Laguiole Steak Knife and 1 Fork
Each Laguiole steak knife & fork, set for 1, is handmade in France by Laguiole en Aubrac, with knife and fork sharing one handle material. It’s a simple way to own one proper place setting for everyday meals. Get one steak knife and fork just for you, or one pair per person in a different wood, so nobody at home ever mixes up whose is whose.
As an everyday dinner knife and fork, the pair comes with handles in woods, horns and more, each satin-finished or polished as the material calls for. Cooking for two? See the Set of 2 Laguiole Steak Knives and 2 Forks. For a full table, there’s the Set of 6 Laguiole Steak Knives, and the Set of 6 Laguiole Dinner Forks comes in the same handles.

Wenge, thuya or vinestock handles
Wenge is a dark wood from equatorial Africa, brown to almost black, with straight grain. Thuya handles come from burls gathered during pruning and upkeep in large European gardens. The wood is a warm blond, dotted with knots. Vinestock is taken from the base of old vines pulled up once they stop producing, then stabilized with resin, which leaves a brown, knotty wood that looks different on every handle. All three are satin-finished. Pick wenge for a dark look, thuya for a light one, vinestock if you want every handle to differ. To compare more handles, read Knife Handle Materials.

Why a set for one makes sense
Most of us eat from one plate with just one knife and fork every day, so this set covers exactly that. Since both pieces of a set share one material, a household can mix wenge, thuya and vinestock at the table and still keep every pair matched. The name Laguiole has no protection, so mass-produced cutlery often carries it too. These pieces are handmade in France, and each knife blade shows its maker, Laguiole en Aubrac.
Building a table one place at a time
Each handle shown here is also offered in the two-place sets, as two-, four- or six-piece steak knife sets, and in sets of 6 dinner forks. Start with a single place setting for yourself, see how the wood or horn looks at your own table over a few weeks, and add more pieces to match whenever you need them. Since each handle is natural, expect slight differences in grain or color from piece to piece.
Knife and fork FAQs
How do you properly hold a fork?
To eat, hold the fork like a pencil, resting on your middle finger with your thumb and index finger on top and the tines facing up. To steady food while you cut, switch it to your left hand, tines down, with your index finger along the back. A Laguiole en Aubrac fork follows the same handle design as its matching knife, so they're clearly a pair at the table.
How do you roll silverware in a napkin?
Lay a cloth napkin flat as a diamond and set the knife and fork next to each other across the middle, a little toward the bottom corner. Fold that corner up over them, fold in the two sides, then roll toward the top corner. Tuck the end under or tie it with a ribbon. A matched pair like this one makes a neat roll for each guest.
Is pizza eaten with a fork and knife in Italy?
Often, yes. In Italy a whole pizza served on its own plate is usually eaten using knife and fork, though many people cut it first and then pick up the slices by hand. At home, a set for one like this Laguiole en Aubrac pair works as well on pizza night as it does with steak.
Care instructions ship with each order. Hand wash the pair, dry both pieces right after, and remember that wood and horn never belong in a dishwasher.
