Wild Peony: Laguiole Knife in Pink Horse Chestnut Burl – Finely Sculpted Bee – Chiseled Spring

595€

Only one “Wild Peony” exists. A single cutler, among the most gifted in the Laguiole en Aubrac workshops, worked it by hand through every stage, from rough blank to finished shine. Look at the handle and you see a flower crumpled in the palm: the pink horse chestnut burl bunches into raspberry petals, runs with veins of golden blond, and is pricked with dark eyes that sit like the hearts of open blossoms. That rosy color is the work of resin stabilization; untreated, the wood is no darker than cream or a light beige. Two satin stainless steel bolsters cap the ends like beads of morning dew, and between them the bloom stays wide open.

Drawn to that flower, a bee has come to rest, and she is the most sculptural bee in the collection. She is modeled in full relief, with two broad ribbed wings fanned open, each rib cut deep into the steel and edged with a sharp little ridge. Her faceted head carries engraved leaves, and her ringed body tapers down in even grooves until it meets the spring. The graver froze her mid-landing, wings still raised, and you could swear she chose this particular flower over all the rest.

Below her, the spring plays the part of the stem. Long leaves with clear midribs sprout left and right of one center line, taking turns all the way from the heel up to the bee, while two polished bands run alongside like stretched droplets of water. Thin black spacers ink a line under each scale, so the rose of the burl never blurs into the bright steel. The satin bolsters stay plain on purpose, two quiet bookends that hand the spotlight to the flower and to the insect that found it.

“Wild Peony” belongs with collectors who like their knives alive: a bloom the resin picked at its very best, a leafy stem filed into the spring, and a finely sculpted bee frozen in the split second she touches down. It is an entire wild garden held in 4.7 inches of handle, made by one pair of hands, and no twin of it will ever be made.

Laguiole en Aubrac Knife in Pink Horse Chestnut Burl

Wood and steel meet here in a small garden scene. The handle is pink horse chestnut burl with raspberry petals folded through with golden blond, a color that comes from stabilization. Black spacers lay a shadow under it, and each end is capped by a satin stainless steel bolster.

The spring is chiseled from end to end with a stem of long, ribbed leaves between two polished bands. Above them, a bee modeled in full relief opens her fan-shaped wings, with engraved leaves on her faceted head and a grooved, ringed body.

A bee in full relief lights on a peony of pink burl, at the tip of a stem of chiseled leaves. One cutler made this scene, once, and it will not be made again. If you have fallen for it, take it home before it blooms for someone else.

Raspberry pink swirls through the horse chestnut burl, crossed by blond streaks and by dark eyes that open like the centers of flowers. Along the spring, long veined leaves alternate on either side of a central line, rising between two bright borders toward the head. There the bee spreads her ribbed wings, her faceted head trimmed with engraved leaves and her ringed body grooved down to the steel.

wild peony: laguiole knife in pink horse chestnut burl – finely sculpted bee – chiseled spring

Nobody planted this peony. It came up inside a horse chestnut burl, where the grain folds and puckers until it reads as petals, raspberry pink stirred through with blond, ruffled like a blossom caught at sunrise, with a scatter of dark eyes at the heart of the flower. Resin took it just as it was, fully open, and set it at the moment that counts. In a real garden that moment lasts one spring morning, somewhere between the closed bud and the first fallen petal.

Every flower stands on a stem, so the cutler gave this one a stem of steel. The spring carries it from heel to tip, long ribbed leaves following one another without a gap, supple in outline and framed by two polished bands. Beneath the bloom, the black spacers act as its cast shadow, and the satin bolsters set a cool bead of dew at either end. Take the knife in at a glance and you find a whole flower, bloom, stem, shadow, and dew, with nothing missing and nothing added for show.

Then the visitor arrived. The bee came down at the top of the spring, and the graver held her in that split second: ribbed wings thrown open like a fan, each vein dug out separately, faceted head bent toward the petals, ringed body still humming from the flight. Modeled in full relief, she is the boldest piece of work on the knife, and her detail survives the scrutiny of a jeweler’s loupe. “Wild Peony” takes the shortest moment a garden has to offer, a flower receiving its first caller, and fixes it in steel. The bloom stays open, the bee never leaves, and only one person will ever own the scene.

Pink Horse Chestnut Burl

Horse chestnut is a close relative of the American buckeye. The burl itself is a lump that rises on the trunk, and inside it the grain is knocked off course and folds over on itself in soft, silky ripples. Few burls used by knifemakers are as gentle or as luminous, and the fine texture drinks in color with unusual depth. During stabilization the wood sits under vacuum while resin works its way into each fiber, and on this handle that treatment is what supplies the peony pink and the golden blond streaks; left untreated, horse chestnut keeps to pale tones of cream and light beige. The treatment also makes the burl harder and denser, and settles it for good.

Silky and full in the hand, it shrugs off moisture. These particular petals will never crumple into any other piece of wood, because each burl blooms once, in one pattern.

Choose "Wild Peony" and you pick a flower at its height, together with the bee that came for it, modeled in full relief by one pair of hands. Bloom, stem, shadow, dew, and visitor form a garden scene nobody else will carry. Garden peonies are gone by noon; this one goes where you go.
