Tawny Dusk: Laguiole Knife in Walnut Root Burl – Brass Bolsters and Copper Liners – Chiseled Bee and Spring

645€

“Tawny Dusk” is a single piece, never repeated, and one of Laguiole en Aubrac’s most seasoned cutlers made all of it by hand. Its handle wears the coat of some wild creature at nightfall. The walnut root burl is a tawny hide of warm brown churned with dark veins, and patches of russet flare up in it as the light sinks, the embers of a day reluctant to end, smoldering just beneath the surface. A close, faintly smoky grain lends that coat the depth of a forest floor, while the two satin brass bolsters, one at each end, catch whatever glow the sky still holds.

The bee on this piece is dressed for a celebration. Beaded borders trim her wings one tiny point at a time, a small engraved flower crowns her head, and her body unfolds in finely ridged rings: jeweler’s work on a few millimeters of steel, the kind you only discover up close and never forget afterward. From her post atop the spring, she rules over the place where three metals meet: the steel she is cut from, the copper at her side, and the brass beneath her.

Below her, the spring opens onto a garden. Four-petal flowers cut with a file, veined leaves, and scattered beads travel the full distance between the bolsters, never repeating the same motif twice in a row, each section a fresh variation on the last. Flanking it, the copper liners have been cut into scallops, framing this steel garden with a double pink line that ripples down the full length of the handle. The satin brass of the bolsters closes the composition at each end: three metals and three different glows in a single knife.

“Tawny Dusk” was made for anyone who loves the golden hour: walnut root burl colored like a resting animal, two brass bolsters for the day’s last gleam, copper liners in a double border like embers along the horizon, and the festively dressed bee, still awake when the rest of the woods has gone quiet. One of a kind, with the warmth of an autumn evening in the hand, and entirely the work of one pair of hands.

Laguiole en Aubrac Knife: Walnut Root Burl, Satin Brass, and Copper

"Tawny Dusk" catches the evening at its most beautiful. The walnut root burl wears a tawny, shadow-streaked coat with russet glints smoldering under its surface, and it sits between two satin brass bolsters, edged by scalloped copper liners that form a double pink border.

A chiseled garden fills the spring from bolster to bolster, with four-petal flowers, veined leaves, and beads in ever-changing order. Above it rises the bee, wings trimmed in beading and a little flower engraved on her head.

A drowsing walnut coat, a last gleam of brass at both ends, copper embers along the flanks, and a bee who won't let the night in: "Tawny Dusk" holds the evening open in the palm. This particular dusk settled on a single knife, numbered and never to be reissued. Claim it, and night will have to fall somewhere else.

Across the handle, walnut root burl spreads a tawny coat of warm brown marbled with dark veins, lit by patches of russet that flare as the light fades. Between scalloped copper liners, flowers with four petals alternate on the spring with veined leaves and beads, and satin brass closes each end. The bee carries beaded borders on her wings and a small engraved flower on her head.

tawny dusk: laguiole knife in walnut root burl – brass bolsters and copper liners – chiseled bee and spring

At this hour the forest changes its skin. Daylight withdraws, trunks flatten into silhouettes, and the last of the light takes refuge in fur. That is what this walnut root burl has held on to: a tawny coat rippling like the flank of a dozing animal, deep brown shot with shadow, its russet glints still breathing and rising whenever the hand that holds it moves. Look at it under a lamp some evening and you will see the coat stir. The animal is only asleep. A handle like this has to be tamed a little before it is truly yours.

Around that coat, the knife gathers up the whole of dusk. Satin brass at the bolsters keeps the last of the sunset, the low glow that lingers on the horizon once everything else has gone brown. Scalloped copper liners run a double pink border down each flank, a smoldering seam between day and night. And on the spring, a chiseled clearing opens in the middle of the evening, planted with four-petal flowers, leaves, and scattered beads. It is a whole golden hour, halted just before it goes out.

When everything else drifts off to sleep, one creature stays awake. At the head of the spring stands the bee in her party best, her wings hemmed with beads and a flower on her head: the last one up at the edge of the woods, she watches over the tawny coat and is never the first to close her eyes. Into 4.7 inches, “Tawny Dusk” gathers the finest part of an evening: the coat of a drowsing animal, the glow still hanging at the edge of the sky, the ember of the horizon, and a sentry who won’t give in to the night. The day’s most beautiful hour, spared its own ending, comes back to your hand every evening.

Walnut Root Burl

Root burl is the hidden part of a walnut, found where the trunk dives toward the roots. The grain there knots, twists against itself, and coils, drawing straight on the soil around it. Its coat is born of that buried struggle: warm tawny brown stirred with dark veining and lit with russet, over a tight, faintly smoky grain that the upper trunk never yields. A tree gives at most one truly fine piece of it, cut as close to the ground as possible, and it is usually saved for exceptional work, which is how this wood from below reaches daylight.

In the hand it feels warm and substantial, and it improves with age: its coat slowly darkens, its russet tones deepen, and the patina left by your hand finishes what the earth began. This coat grew only once, on one tree, in one direction.

To choose "Tawny Dusk" is to tame a creature nobody else will get near: a one-of-a-kind burl set off by brass and copper, assembled by one pair of hands, and ready to mellow with you over the decades. It also brings one of the rarest luxuries in fine cutlery, a knife you know, each time you take it out, has no double anywhere. Dusk belongs to everyone. This one will belong to you alone.
