This Laguiole knife with a pressed horn handle and stainless steel bolsters is a versatile pocket knife equipped with a blade, corkscrew, and awl. The forced notch blade is made of Sandvik 12C27MOD steel, which offers excellent corrosion resistance and good cutting hold. The corkscrew’s shank is solid and firmly fixed, while the awl is ideal for piercing holes in leather or other materials.

The handle of this Laguiole knife, called “3-piece,” is made from pressed horn, a material that offers an excellent grip. The solid brass bolsters add a touch of refinement and sturdiness, while the mechanically guilloché patterned spring adds a touch of style. The blade and bolsters have been polished to achieve a shiny finish that reflects the quality and beauty of this knife.

In the past, the awl on Laguiole knives was used to pierce the paunch of animals. In the rural and mountainous regions of France where Laguiole knives were used, farmers and breeders often used the punch to perforate the stomachs of animals to aid digestion and prevent bloating.

However, today, this feature is less relevant for most Laguiole knife users, who prefer to use the punch for more common tasks such as piercing holes in thick materials.

About Pressed Horn:

Pressed horn is a distinct material employed in crafting the handles for basic Laguiole knives. This unique substance is formed by heating horn and molding it under intense pressure into a solid block. Artisans can then meticulously carve and shape this block to create the handles that grace these renowned knives.

Unlike traditional natural horn, pressed horn boasts a uniform appearance and texture. This consistency not only imparts a particular aesthetic charm but also facilitates the crafting process for skilled knife makers. It's worth noting, however, that pressed horn tends to be more delicate than its natural counterpart, rendering it more susceptible to cracking or breaking.
