In the past, the awl on Laguiole knives was used to pierce the stomachs of animals. In the rural and mountainous regions of France where Laguiole knives were employed, farmers and herders often used the awl to pierce the animals’ stomachs to aid digestion and prevent bloating.
However, nowadays, this feature is less relevant for most Laguiole knife users, who instead prefer to use the awl for more common tasks such as drilling holes in thick materials.
