Gold of the Peatlands: Laguiole Knife in Bog Oak – Brass Bolsters and Copper Liners – Chiseled Bee and Spring

630€

Thousands of years under peat turned this oak black, and satin brass and scalloped copper now frame it: “Gold of the Peatlands” comes up out of the marsh wearing its jewelry. Laguiole en Aubrac entrusted this one-of-a-kind knife to one of its most experienced cutlers, who shaped it by hand from beginning to end. Its handle is morta, also known as bog oak: an oak the marsh held beneath the peat for millennia, which surfaced black, streaked with deep gray, its fiber hardened into a kind of night-dark bark. The wood drinks in the light. Its matte surface returns nothing but the streaks, with tiny inlaid steel dots glittering among them like drops of water trapped in the material. Two satin brass bolsters close off this fragment of another age.

The bee on this piece is dressed for a celebration. Beaded borders trim her wings one tiny point at a time, a small engraved flower crowns her head, and her body unfolds in finely ridged rings: jeweler’s work on a few millimeters of steel, the kind you only discover up close and never forget afterward. From her post atop the spring, she rules over the place where three metals meet: the steel she is cut from, the copper at her side, and the brass beneath her.

Below her, the spring opens onto a garden. Four-petal flowers cut with a file, veined leaves, and scattered beads travel the full distance between the bolsters, never repeating the same motif twice in a row, each section a fresh variation on the last. Flanking it, the copper liners have been cut into scallops, framing this steel garden with a double pink line that ripples down the full length of the handle. The satin brass of the bolsters closes the composition at each end: three metals and three different glows in a single knife.

“Gold of the Peatlands” is meant for anyone who loves materials with a long memory: wood that time has made better than any workshop could, two warm metals, yellow brass and pink copper, wrapped around its darkness, and a festive bee watching over everything from the head of the spring. A one-of-a-kind piece, sold with its scar, that will never look like anything but itself.

Good to know before choosing this piece: during shaping, a small chip of wood came away beside the center rivet. It has been left visible on purpose, with no filler and no retouching. Morta spent thousands of years in peat, and this scar says more about the material than any polishing could. It is part of the knife, a one-of-a-kind piece sold as is.

Laguiole en Aubrac Knife: Bog Oak (Morta) with Brass and Copper

On "Gold of the Peatlands," the night is set in two warm metals. Its handle is morta, oak blackened by thousands of years under peat, framed by two satin brass bolsters and by scalloped copper liners that draw a double pink line along the whole length.

Fine steel dots inlaid in the wood glint between its gray streaks. On the spring, file-cut flowers, veined leaves, and beads make up a garden beneath a bee with beaded wings and a flowered head. Beside the center rivet, a small chip in the wood is part of the piece's story.

A bog-dark oak between brass and copper, a steel garden, and a festive bee guarding the find: "Gold of the Peatlands" turns the night of the marsh into a jewel. The bog took thousands of years to prepare this handle, and it will not do so again. One piece, one scar, one owner: let it be you.

Morta, oak darkened over millennia in peat, gives the handle a matte black streaked with gray and lit by tiny inlaid steel dots. Satin brass bolsters and scalloped copper liners surround it, while the spring carries a chiseled garden of flowers, leaves, and beads. The bee stands at its head, her wings trimmed with beads and her head marked by a small engraved flower.

gold of the peatlands: laguiole knife in bog oak – brass bolsters and copper liners – chiseled bee and spring

Thousands of years ago, an oak came down in a marsh. Water swallowed it, peat buried it, and the world went on as if it had never stood. With no light, no air, and no seasons, only the bog’s slow acid worked on it, dissolving the outer sapwood, preserving the heart, and staining the fiber year after year, century after century, until it reached this gray-streaked black that no dye or scorching quite manages to imitate. Morta is transformed wood, half oak and half stone, signed deep within by the earth in its own hand.

Then one day the marsh released its treasure, and the cutler treated it the way treasure deserves, with a setting. Satin brass at both ends, a warm, frank yellow that picks up the day. The liners are copper, cut into a double scalloped border, a pink glow rippling down the handle. And between them, the chiseled garden of the spring, with flowers, leaves, and scattered beads, where the festively dressed bee holds court. Few woods in cutlery are darker than this one, and here it meets the warmest metals: the night of the bog, mounted like a jewel.

Now take a closer look at the handle, near the center rivet. A small chip is missing. At the shaping stage the marsh took back a little of what it had given, and no one tried to reclaim it: nothing was filled or disguised, and the scar remains open, signed by a material that lay underground far longer than the Laguiole has existed. One-of-a-kind pieces have that privilege. They need not be flawless, only honest, and this one is fully at ease with it. Right down to the chip it lacks, “Gold of the Peatlands” tells the truth, and perhaps that is precisely where the treasure gives itself away.

Bog Oak (Morta)

Nobody plants morta, farms it, or replaces it. It begins as an oak that sank into a marsh several thousand years back and stayed buried, slowly transformed beneath the peat. Cut off from air and steeped in acidic water, the fiber absorbed minerals from the soil and turned a deep black streaked with gray, while the wood grew nearly as dense as stone. The wood in your hand has become something else, halfway to fossil, and peat bogs give it up only a little at a time: each trunk raised is a find, and none looks like the one before.

Matte, dense, and smooth under the fingers, unbothered by the water that shaped it, morta handles the years with ease. It has already come through far worse.

Choosing "Gold of the Peatlands" means carrying a piece of a prehistoric forest, which one pair of hands has framed in brass and copper. It is a material that no farm and no workshop can produce, released sparingly by the bogs and prepared by time over millennia, scar included, worn here like a signature. A treasure that surfaced once and will not surface again: you decide whose hand it ends up in.
