Wild Honey: Laguiole Knife in Golden Amboyna Burl – Brass Bolsters and Copper Liners – Chiseled Bee and Spring

688€

“Wild Honey” exists once, and every stage of its making passed through the hands of one of Laguiole en Aubrac’s best cutlers. The handle is honey that has not yet been strained. Golden amboyna burl rolls in swirls of light caramel and warm amber, sprinkled with tiny brown knots, like the precious specks that settle at the bottom of a jar straight from the harvest. The wood flows along the outline of the knife like a slow pour, eddies frozen mid-flow, and two satin brass bolsters carry its warmth out to each end, so that wood and metal look as though they came from one hive.

The bee on this piece is dressed for a celebration. Beaded borders trim her wings one tiny point at a time, a small engraved flower crowns her head, and her body unfolds in finely ridged rings: jeweler’s work on a few millimeters of steel, the kind you only discover up close and never forget afterward. From her post atop the spring, she rules over the place where three metals meet: the steel she is cut from, the copper at her side, and the brass beneath her.

Below her, the spring opens onto a garden. Four-petal flowers cut with a file, veined leaves, and scattered beads travel the full distance between the bolsters, never repeating the same motif twice in a row, each section a fresh variation on the last. Flanking it, the copper liners have been cut into scallops, framing this steel garden with a double pink line that ripples down the full length of the handle. The satin brass of the bolsters closes the composition at each end: three metals and three different glows in a single knife.

“Wild Honey” is meant for those who love a perfect match: honey-toned wood from a distant island, a garden chiseled in steel for foraging, brass and copper to set it all off, and the bee in her festive best, finally settled above a treasure of her own. One of a kind and consistent down to the last detail, it was carried from first step to final polish by one pair of hands.

Laguiole en Aubrac Knife: Golden Amboyna Burl with Brass Bolsters and Copper Liners

"Wild Honey" matches a honey-colored wood with a jeweler's hive. Golden amboyna burl, swirled with caramel and amber and dotted with brown knots, sits between two satin brass bolsters and runs along scalloped copper liners that trace a double pink line.

The spring becomes a flower bed for the bee to work: file-cut blossoms with four petals, finely veined leaves, and seed-like beads, never in the same order twice running. Above it, the bee shows off beaded wing borders and a tiny flower engraved on her head.

Golden amboyna burl swirls through the handle in pale caramel and warm amber, scattered with small brown knots. Between scalloped copper liners and satin brass bolsters, the spring is chiseled with four-petal flowers, veined leaves, and fine beads. At its head, the bee has beaded edges on her wings, finely ringed segments, and a little engraved flower crowning her head.

wild honey: laguiole knife in golden amboyna burl – brass bolsters and copper liners – chiseled bee and spring

Imagine the harvest. On an island somewhere in the Moluccas, a tree spent decades producing this particular honey. The amboyna, whose burl grows out of swellings on its trunk, stirred its sugars slowly, swirl upon swirl and season upon season, pale caramel, warm amber, reddish gold, with little brown knots floating in it like the hidden riches of a hive in the wild. No apiary was involved. The forest stored it up by itself, and all the cutler had to do was gather it without losing a drop.

Around that harvest, the manufacture built a hive. Satin brass guards both entrances, a frank yellow metal that answers the golden wood. Along the flanks, scalloped copper liners draw a double pink border, like warm wax trickling over the rim of the comb. Down the middle, the spring is a flower bed for foraging, chiseled with four-petal blossoms, veined leaves, and scattered beads, cut into steel so it never wilts. The hive was only missing its tenant, and she is already here.

The bee has a place on every knife in this series, but here she feels most at home. Dressed for a celebration at the head of the spring, with beaded wings and a flowered head, she keeps watch over countless knives from the manufacture. On this one, at last, the honey she guards is her own. With an entire handle of wild harvest, a garden of steel under her feet, and brass and copper for a palace, it is hard to imagine finer lodgings. “Wild Honey” packs this jeweler’s hive into 4.7 inches, with honey, flowers, wax, and bee all present. Only the sugar is gone, replaced by something that keeps far longer: beauty.

Golden Amboyna Burl

Amboyna owes its name to Ambon, an island in the Moluccas archipelago, and its burls have been sailing from there to European workshops for centuries. Cabinetmakers to the royal courts were already vying for them, and high-end cutlery now keeps them for its finest knives. A burl is a swelling on the trunk in which the fibers wind into tight swirls. On this handle those swirls pour like golden honey in tones of light caramel and warm amber, pricked with small brown knots that give the coat the depth of a wild harvest. Call it plant-grown gold, its sheen laid down by the growing itself.

Amboyna burl is dense, smooth, and warm to hold, and it gets better with the years: its honey tone darkens gently and gains depth, a harvest that keeps ripening in your palm. Burls never repeat their swirls, so these exist on this handle and nowhere else.

Choosing "Wild Honey" is claiming for yourself the one jar this honey ever filled: a one-of-a-kind piece framed in brass and copper, whose coat keeps maturing in your hands as the years pass. It also offers the Laguiole bee the single knife on which she watches over her own treasure, and it brings you into the small circle of people who own a knife with no double. A honey you can't eat, but can pass on like a family recipe.
