Tide of Stars: Laguiole Knife in Blue Elder Burl – Brass Bolsters and Copper Liners – Chiseled Bee and Spring

655€

No other knife will ever look like “Tide of Stars.” One of Laguiole en Aubrac’s most gifted cutlers made it alone and by hand, every step of the way. The handle holds the sea at night. Blue elder burl churns with eddies of ink and azure, and golden, creamy pockets ride that current like stars snagged in the swell, sliding along the grain without ever sinking. The deep-water blue is the work of resin stabilization, since elder in its natural state ranges from cream to light beige. Stabilization also makes the wood dense, a material made to endure.

The bee on this piece is dressed for a celebration. Beaded borders trim her wings one tiny point at a time, a small engraved flower crowns her head, and her body unfolds in finely ridged rings: jeweler’s work on a few millimeters of steel, the kind you only discover up close and never forget afterward. From her post atop the spring, she rules over the place where three metals meet: the steel she is cut from, the copper at her side, and the brass beneath her.

Below her, the spring opens onto a garden. Four-petal flowers cut with a file, veined leaves, and scattered beads travel the full distance between the bolsters, never repeating the same motif twice in a row, each section a fresh variation on the last. Flanking it, the copper liners have been cut into scallops, framing this steel garden with a double pink line that ripples down the full length of the handle. The satin brass of the bolsters closes the composition at each end: three metals and three different glows in a single knife.

“Tide of Stars” was made for anyone drawn to the heavens: a burl where ocean and night have traded colors, two brass shorelines holding back the tide, scalloped copper liners blushing like dawn breaking over the water, and the festive bee posted on lookout. A one-of-a-kind piece from a single pair of hands, meant to be carried the way you would keep the memory of a perfect night close to you.

In the middle of the current, the spring carries a chiseled archipelago of four-petaled blooms, leaves with fine veins, and tiny beads. At the top, the bee keeps lookout, her wings outlined in beading and her head marked with an engraved flower.

A stolen night to hold: blue elder swells, stars adrift, a pair of brass shores waiting, and a bee who counts every one. This night rose once and will not rise again, and once this knife has found its owner, it is gone from the collection for good. Make sure that owner is you.

Blue elder burl rolls in eddies of ink and azure, with pockets of cream and gold drifting through the current like scattered stars. The spring, framed by scalloped copper liners, carries flowers with four petals, veined leaves, and beads, and satin brass bolsters close each end. At the head rises the bee, with bead-trimmed wings, a ringed body, and a small engraved flower.

tide of stars: laguiole knife in blue elder burl – brass bolsters and copper liners – chiseled bee and spring

One evening the sea made off with the sky. It took every last star and rolled them into its swell, and this blue elder burl still tells the story. The blue keeps moving: inky eddies, azure currents, whirlpools stopped in mid-turn, a swell caught red-handed. Everywhere the stolen stars drift along, pockets of gold and cream that the tide ferries across the handle, end to end, and never extinguishes. Tip the handle and the current starts again, and the stars change places. This is wood you navigate, a little further with each look.

Sooner or later every tide makes landfall. This one comes ashore at both ends of the knife, on the satin brass bolsters, two warm beaches where the night unloads its cargo. In between, the scalloped copper liners ride the motion, a double pink border rippling down the handle like first light on dark water. And in the middle, the chiseled garden of the spring stands firm in the current, with its flowers, leaves, and scattered beads: a steel archipelago that the tide parts around and never carries off.

Anyone who steals a sky needs someone to keep an eye on it. The festively dressed bee has taken the lookout post at the head of the spring, beads edging her wings, a flower crowning her head, and every time a hand passes over the stars she counts them again. She never comes up short. That bee is what makes sense of the piece: on a Laguiole, nothing that shines goes unwatched. “Tide of Stars” holds an entire night in 4.7 inches, from the sea bold enough to commit the theft to the drifting stars, the brass shores awaiting them, and the sentinel who lets none escape. All it takes is an open hand for the tide to rise.

Blue Elder Burl

A burl is the elder's way of breaking ranks. On certain swellings of the trunk, the fibers abandon straight growth and begin to whirl, coiling into eddies, pockets, and tight knots. Here that disorder reads as a tide, with ink and azure currents running across the surface and knots floating among them as golden stars, each one keeping its position in the flow. Under vacuum, resin is driven into every fiber, and that stabilization is what brings the deep-sea blue, because left untreated, elder stops at cream or pale beige. The burl also emerges harder, denser, and lastingly stable.

Full and silky in the hand, the stabilized burl shrugs off humidity. No other knife will see these stars come up, since no tide ever washes over the same place twice.

Choosing "Tide of Stars" means holding on to a night the sea had stolen, set in brass and copper by one pair of hands. It means carrying, day after day, a piece that will never be reproduced or spun into variations, and that starts the tide moving once more with a simple tilt toward the light. Here is a knife to show off, to talk about, and to pass on: the stars will stay in your hand from now on.
