The distinctive personality of this Laguiole knife comes from a material steeped in time: fossilised mammoth molar. After thousands of years buried underground, this ancient substance reveals a palette of browns, from warm mid-tones to deep, darker shades, veined and marbled by the fossilisation process. Each handle displays its own natural pattern, shaped by the gradual densification and mineralisation of the tooth.

In the Laguiole en Aubrac workshops, this fossil molar is shaped and finished with great care to bring out its texture and colour variations. Polishing enhances the contrasts and reveals the particular character of each fragment. The handle gains an authentic, singular presence, closely linked to the natural history of the material itself.

The stainless Balbach Damascus blade is forged from fine layers of steel and shows intricate, swirling patterns typical of this type of Damascus. Its appearance echoes the richness of the handle. Hand-filed double plates, shaped bolsters, a decorated spring and a forged bee complete a build that stays true to traditional Laguiole craftsmanship.

The decoration of the bee, whether engraved or plain, the style of the decorative patterns on the liners, as well as the grain, color, and natural markings of the handle vary from one piece to another, depending on the knifemaker’s inspiration. Additionally, it is not possible to engrave a Damascus blade.

laguiole pocket knife – damascus balbach blade & double liners – brown mammoth molar

This Laguiole pocket knife stands out through the remarkable origin of its handle: a genuine mammoth molar, preserved for thousands of years in frozen ground. Over time, this ancient material has taken on warm brown tones and subtle irregularities that tell the story of its fossilisation. No two pieces share the same surface or pattern of colour, so each knife carries its own, unmistakable character.

Working with this fossilised molar calls for meticulous precision. Polishing reveals the compact, mineralised structure of the material and highlights the slow transformation it has undergone across the ages.

The knife is fitted with a Balbach stainless Damascus blade, created by stacking and forging multiple layers of steel. Its flowing lines and ripples give the blade striking visual depth. Altogether, this is a knife where human craftsmanship meets a material drawn from a very distant past.

Damascus Blades: A Legacy of Craft and Contemporary Excellence

A Damascus blade is far more than just a cutting edge — it represents an ancient craft refined over more than two thousand years. Originating in ancient India and spreading across the Middle East, this technique involves layering steels with complementary properties, forge-welding them under heat, then repeatedly folding and hammering the metal. The result is a blade that is strong, flexible, and razor-sharp. Its wave-like patterns, reminiscent of mineral formations, are forged directly into the steel, making every blade completely unique.

Traditionally, Damascus steel was prone to rust and required regular care. Thanks to advances in metallurgy — notably by forges like Balbach in Germany — it is now possible to produce stainless Damascus blades. These retain the mesmerizing forged patterns while offering excellent resistance to everyday corrosion. Modern Damascus unites the best of both worlds: the noble tradition of hand-forging and the innovation of contemporary steelwork.

Mammoth Molar

The mammoth molar has been a raw material used in knife-making for centuries. It comes from the molars of mammoths, prehistoric creatures that disappeared thousands of years ago. These molars are incredibly hard, resilient, and durable, making them a sought-after material for knife makers.

Mammoth molars have a unique texture that varies depending on the region they come from. They are often streaked with white lines, colored by knife makers, resulting from layers of enamel and dentin that formed over the years. Each molar is one-of-a-kind, giving each piece a distinct appearance and texture.
Due to their natural origin, the appearance may vary from one handle to another. The images shown are not binding.
