This Laguiole folding knife belongs to that select group of exceptional pieces crafted from rare materials: in this case, a fossilized mammoth molar that spent thousands of years in the frozen soils of Arctic regions. Marked by time, this ancient material offers a natural color palette ranging from cream to light browns, with bluish tones created by its mineralization and enhanced with subtle coloration. Each section has its own visual “landscape”, making every handle a one-of-a-kind piece that cannot be reproduced identically.

The artisanal work calls for highly precise shaping to unveil the full richness of the fossil material. After polishing, the mammoth molar reveals fine veins and distinctive gradients, bearing witness to its long rest in ice and earth. The knife thus gains an authentic character, where its prehistoric origin meets a contemporary, refined look.

The handle is paired with a Balbach Damascus blade in stainless steel, whose flowing patterns result from forging multiple layers of steel together. This process gives the blade a striking, singular appearance that perfectly matches the unique character of the handle. From the finely fileworked double liners and the two stainless steel bolsters to the decorated spring and forged bee, every detail is made following the traditional standards of Laguiole en Aubrac.

The decoration of the bee, whether engraved or plain, the style of the decorative patterns on the liners, as well as the grain, color, and natural markings of the handle vary from one piece to another, depending on the knifemaker’s inspiration. Additionally, it is not possible to engrave a Damascus blade.

Crafted from a material as precious as it is unusual, this Laguiole pocket knife showcases mammoth molar, a natural relic unearthed from frozen ground after thousands of years. This fossil material, shaped entirely by hand, reveals here a cool blue dominant tone, characteristic of its mineralization, enriched with lighter shades and natural variations that make every handle truly unique.

Transforming this ancient matter into a knife handle requires exceptionally delicate work. As the artisans carefully polish it, they gradually reveal its colors, mineral layers and fossil fibers. The result is a handle that expresses a rare balance between prehistoric material and traditional craftsmanship.

Damascus Blades: A Legacy of Craft and Contemporary Excellence

A Damascus blade is far more than just a cutting edge — it represents an ancient craft refined over more than two thousand years. Originating in ancient India and spreading across the Middle East, this technique involves layering steels with complementary properties, forge-welding them under heat, then repeatedly folding and hammering the metal. The result is a blade that is strong, flexible, and razor-sharp. Its wave-like patterns, reminiscent of mineral formations, are forged directly into the steel, making every blade completely unique.

Traditionally, Damascus steel was prone to rust and required regular care. Thanks to advances in metallurgy — notably by forges like Balbach in Germany — it is now possible to produce stainless Damascus blades. These retain the mesmerizing forged patterns while offering excellent resistance to everyday corrosion. Modern Damascus unites the best of both worlds: the noble tradition of hand-forging and the innovation of contemporary steelwork.

The Mammoth Molar

The mammoth molar has been a raw material used in knife-making for centuries. It comes from the molars of mammoths, prehistoric creatures that disappeared thousands of years ago. These molars are incredibly hard, resilient, and durable, making them a sought-after material for knife makers.

Mammoth molars have a unique texture that varies depending on the region they come from. They are often streaked with white lines, colored by knife makers, resulting from layers of enamel and dentin that formed over the years. Each molar is one-of-a-kind, giving each piece a distinct appearance and texture.
Due to their natural origin, the appearance may vary from one handle to another. The images shown are not binding.
