Glowing Abstraction: Laguiole Knife in Red Mammoth Molar – Sculpted Bee – Chiseled Spring and Bolsters

1659€

A bee with every literal feature stripped away, resting on a handle the color of embers: that pairing gave “Glowing Abstraction” its name, and it is what makes the piece unique. Its maker, a single cutler at Laguiole en Aubrac, did every step by hand to produce one unrepeatable piece. In the red mammoth molar, the color goes so dark it nearly turns black, peppered with vermilion flecks that burn through like live coals, while amber and honey light up one face and the other stays in the dark. A black spacer outlines the fossil and keeps it apart from the stainless liners.

The bee at the top has stopped looking like an insect. Only her outline survives, a bell that widens toward the bottom, and nothing figurative remains: the separate wings, the ringed body, and the head have all disappeared. A network of stippled compartments bounded by polished ribs fills the entire shape and serves as her body. Stripped to her framework, she keeps just enough of her original form to be recognized.

From her, the same network flows down onto the spring, runs its length with no interruption at all, spreads across the two bolsters, and climbs back to the head, so there is no telling where the bee stops and the ornament starts. Each compartment was ringed with a deep cut and stippled at the bottom, within a few millimeters of width and with no way to fix a mistake. Body and spring become one continuous surface, and that is the singular thing here: nowhere else in the series is the idea taken this far.

“Glowing Abstraction” belongs with collectors who respond to pared-down design as strongly as to a striking material. Ember-flecked red molar edged in black, stainless liners, a bee reduced to her silhouette, and one chiseled network over the spring and both bolsters add up to an unusually unified piece, made to be studied as closely as it is used.

Laguiole en Aubrac Knife with a Red Mammoth Molar Handle

A bee stripped of every figurative trace sits above a handle the color of embers. The red mammoth molar is a dark, near-black red flecked with vermilion, lit on one face with amber and honey while the reverse stays dark, and a black spacer runs between the molar and the stainless steel liners.

One stippled network with polished ribs covers the spring end to end, takes in both bolsters, and climbs to the head, where it turns into the bee, a bell that flares toward the bottom. Body and spring merge into one.

  • 4.7" (12 cm) handle in red mammoth molar. Black spacer, stainless steel liners.
  • Exclusive model: one of a kind, never to be reproduced.
  • Blade in Sandvik 12C27MOD stainless steel.
  • Abstract sculpted bee. Spring and two bolsters chiseled in one continuous network.
  • Made entirely by hand by a single cutler.
  • Cotton pouch and numbered certificate of authenticity included.
  • 14-page guide to the craftsmanship charter of the authentic Laguiole included.

Embers in the material, structure in the steel, and a bee distilled to pure form. This piece was conceived once and made once, and it will never be repeated. If you are looking for a Laguiole that breaks every habit, you have found it.

Dark red close to black, lit by vermilion flecks like live coals, the molar warms to amber and honey on one face and stays in shadow on the other. A stippled network ringed with polished ribs runs the whole spring and wraps both bolsters before climbing to the head. There it becomes the bee, a bell-shaped outline filled with the same cells, so body and spring form a single surface.

The red in this handle runs deep. It rises from far down in the material, dark almost to black, with vermilion breaking through in spots like embers that never quite went out. Amber and honey break up the gloom across one face. Turn it over and the other side keeps to the night, so the story changes with the way you hold it. These patches began as plates in a living mammoth’s molar, and the cold of the steppe kept them intact for whole millennia.

Against this smoldering material, the decoration goes minimal. A network of stippled compartments ringed by polished ribs runs along the entire spring, spreads over the two bolsters, and rises to the head. You won’t find a single recognizable motif, not a leaf, not a scroll, only one structure repeated tirelessly, each cell outlined with a deep line and stippled at the bottom. Running a thumb over it is like reading a text in a language that has been lost: the meaning escapes you, yet you can’t stop following it.

Reach the head of the knife and it all comes together. The bee is there, but she has given up everything: no wings, no ringed body, no head. What remains is an outline shaped like a bell, packed with the very network that covers the spring, and she grows out of it without the slightest break, as though the decoration had taken on a body on its way up. There is no saying where the pattern ends and the insect begins, which is exactly why she holds your eye. “Glowing Abstraction” carries its idea all the way through: a bee that no longer tries to look like one, yet is recognized at a glance.

Red Mammoth Molar

The network chiseled on the spring has a natural counterpart inside the handle. A woolly mammoth's cheek tooth is an assembly in its own right: dentin plates wrapped in folds of enamel, each fused to the next by cementum, a structure as complex as anything the animal kingdom produces. A mammoth went through these teeth one set after another, several in a lifetime. The species vanished long ago, and its remains are still exhumed from Arctic permafrost in Siberia, Alaska, and Canada. Sawn open and polished, the tooth shows patches whose layout has never occurred twice.

Raw fossil is too porous and fragile to work, so it is first stabilized with resin under vacuum. The process gives it density, protects it from rot, and makes it durable. It is also what brings in this red, since molar on its own stays between cream and brown. The result is heavy and cool to the touch, with a stony polish that wood cannot offer.

On "Glowing Abstraction," the two faces of the handle do not match: one brightens with amber and honey, the other stays in dark embers. There is no second example, and there never will be.
